Sociology is a gateway to comprehend the patterns of human behavior, their feelings and attitudes and human reactions towards the incidents they encounter in their day to day lives. Sociological imagination, which comes under the discipline of Sociology, is the essence of thinking out of the box and viewing the human and society with the absence of prejudices and discriminations. The Department of Sociology, University of Ruhuna, Matara, Sri Lanka always encourages the academia to follow this ideology and as a result of this endeavor, the Sociological Association was established on July 25, 1990. Sociological Association is a dynamic organization that reflects societal needs emerging, and strive to reach the society through innovative approaches. The events organized by the association holds constructive and innovative dimensions, through which students and staff members are facilitated to come together to ask some of the bigger questions whilst arriving at aggregable solution in line with knowledge and research.
The membership is open to all students who follow the honors degree in sociology and other students who follow the general degree. Main objective of the association is to facilitate sociological research and promotes networks of communication to all who are interested in the discipline. With the intention of achieving objectives of the association, an online platform has been created, where members can express their views and thoughts. “The Sociological Association” Website is the official E-version of the Sociological Association, University of Ruhuna,Matara, Sri Lanka and this official website provides the platform to express the people’s thoughts, feelings and ideas regarding various social phenomena and furthermore this website provides information of the Sociological Association, past and upcoming events and academic contributions of students and academic staff of the Department of Sociology.
Events of the Association
As one of the prominent and vibrant association of the university we always try to implement several types of activities. With the purpose of achieving goals and objectives of the Sociological Association we have implemented different projects to develop both intellectual and emotional intelligence of our students. Sociological Association conduct many workshops, discussions, and lecture series to enhance undergraduates’ knowledge regarding several field. Moreover we have organized many community based programs with the aim of making desired improvements to the community and to uplift the community participation. Sociological Association facilitates Sociological research to motivate undergraduates to engage in research works and promotes network of communication to all who are interested in the discipline.
Furthermore, the Sociological Association conduct workshop on new subject areas of Sociology and the carrier opportunities of Sociology graduates. As a sociological association we are responsible to make an awareness about the field of sociology to the society. With that purpose several Publications, magazines have been published under the association. Therefore, within this section the past and upcoming events are presented.

The inter-university students’ competition, "A New Dawn - අලුත් උදෑසනක් " is organized by the Sociological Association, Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Cultural Centre of the University of Ruhuna consists of eighteen different events that are distinctive from one another.

Sky In the Cyber Space
Sociological Association of the Department of Sociology, University of Ruhuna is deeply concerned on promoting the application of Sociological Imagination in understanding phenomena grounded in society and it facilitates members to think outside the existing limits of understanding. The Sociological Association conducts several academic and community-cultural events in order to study the society through a unprejudiced lens and it is expected to promote viewing the socio-cultural diversities without any racial, ethnic or religious barriers.
Sky in the Cyberspace is such a kind of proud product of the Sociological Association and every member can freely present their creations such as poems, stories, contents, reviews, photographs and videos .
Library
It consists of two main sections, the department library and the publications.
The Department Library
The Department Library is one of the few specialized libraries within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students also have access to a large collection of publications in the main University Library. The Department has its own reference library containing both classics in the combined disciplines of Sociology, Social Anthropology, and Psychology as well as selected local and overseas journals and magazines. Books include reports and ethnographies as well as theoretical tracts.
