The Meeting with the Team of National Peace Council (NPC) and the Academic Staff in the Department of Public Policy and Sociology

A meeting was held with the National Peace Council and the staff members of the Department of Public Policy and the Department of Sociology to discuss about the prospects, plans and potential collaborative work. The discussion was based on the extension of the virtual workshop series conducted by the NPC for university academics of several universities. NPC wanted to receive some feedbacks of those workshops. Ten members from the two departments (Department of Public Policy and the Department of Sociology) of the university of Ruhuna were participated in the meeting.

The major points discussed at the meeting were:

  • To organise an academic research conference to enhance research on the field of transitional justice, reconciliation and the topics related to conflict and peace studies
  • To organise series of workshops for the students and how to identify the potential group of students
  • Discussed the effectiveness of the virtual workshops conducted by the NPC for the selected academics of the targeted four universities included UOR and the potentials and the possibilities of continuing it in the future
  • Discussed to prepare a glossary/mini dictionary for the technical terms used in the conflict and peace studies. Prior to do that it was suggested to conduct a research on how do the general public interpret and understand the technical terms in peace studies
  • Discussed the potential subjects and courses related to peace and conflict studies, lecture topics that can be included into the existing course units and syllabus revisions in the future at the department
  • Suggested to introduce a certificate course in peace and transitional justice
  • Discussed different methods of promoting and communicating the real meanings of the technical terminologies related to peace and conflict studies in easy and understandable medium to the general public, such as small video clips in YouTube
  • Discussed about the possibilities of the internship opportunities and research opportunities at the NPC for the final year students
