Annual Field Study in Jaffna

Department of Public Policy, University of Ruhuna organized the annual field visit in Jaffna from the 27th -29th of December. The undergraduates in the program of the special degree in Political Science spent three days in Jaffna, doing a number of tasks related to academic and personal development. They collected empirical data on the voting behavior in the Presidential Election 2019, focusing on the public rationality and choice in electing a president in 2019. The face to face discussion with the undergraduates at the University of Jaffna took place to share the public perceptions of the election 2019.

The undergraduates learnt the common challenges pertaining to all ethnic groups in the country. Additionally, the stereotyping women as a secondary group in the both Sinhala and Tamil communities were pointed in the discussion. The undergraduates from both universities understood the importance of territorial integrity, ensuring human rights and democratic form of governance. The research findings will be published.

Department of Public Policy would like to appreciate the guidance of Snr. Professor SujeewaAmarasena, Vice- Chancellor, the University of Ruhuna in arranging the field visit. Itis worth to mention the enormous effort and cooperation. Prof. K.T.Ganeshalingam- (Head of Department), Mr. Vigneswaran- Senior Lecturer at Department of Political Science, University of Jaffna. Also, the heartfelt gratitude goes to Dr. Mahendran Thiruvarangan, senior Lecturer, at the Department of English, the University of Jaffna for his well- cooperation in arranging the event. Mr. Vimal Swaminathan, senior lecturer offered the interpretation service without any hesitation.
