9th ICSLS  

The 9th International Conference on Sri Lankan Studies (9th ICSLS) was The 9th ICSLS was held at the at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Ruhuna, Matara, Sri Lanka from 28th to 30th November 2003.  About 200 scholars studying various aspects of the history and the contemporary society of Sri Lanka.attended the conference. The conference organizing was coordinated by Prof. Sarath Amarasinghe of the Department of Sociology, University of Ruhuna. A seven member- international organizing committee and a national advisory committee of seventeen members representing universities and other institutions contributed in organizing the conference. The conference consisted of   40 academic sessions. A sight seening tour was also organized to "Madunagala" enabling participants to traverse across a combination of rural landscapes in the southern Sri Lanka. Generous finacial resources provided by the Royal Norweigian Embassy of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Samurdhi Affairs  was a crucial factor that made the conference a reality.

The 1st ICSLS was held at the Sussex University in September 1987. The event attracted a gathering of about 25 scholars mainly from the European countries. It however marked a  beginning of a scholarly forum for international exchange of research findings on Sri Lanka Studies. Milke Moore, Jock Stirret and James Manner of the Sussex University organized the conference.

Within a span of two years, the Conference became a popular academic forum. About 40 scholars participated in the 2nd ICSLS held in 1989 at the School of Advanced Studies in Social Science in Paris and coordinated by Eric Meyer. The participants were from different parts of the world and therefore, the conference acquired an international orientation.

The 3rd ICSLS was held at Vrije University, Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 1991 with the participation of over 100 scholars. The 4th ICSLS held in 1993 recorded a landmark change as it was held in Colombo Sri Lanka. Siri Hettige organized the conference. Number of participants increased to 150.

Debora Winslow and Dennis Mc Gilvray jointly coordinated the 5th ICSLS in 1995. The conference was held at the University of New Hampshire with a participation of about 100.

6th ICSLS was held in Kandy, Sri Lanka in 1997. Shantha  Hennayake coordinated the conference. The number of participants increased to about 160.

The seventh conference was in 1999 at the University of New England. Siri Gamage coordinated the conference  The 8th ICSLS  was held in November 2001 at the South Asia Center University of Rajasthan, Jaipur in India. Karori Singh coordinated the conference. [BACK TO TOP]
